AI and the Literature Review Process - Birmingham City University Guide

Overview

This guide shows you how you can use AI tools to help with aspects of the literature review process: Abstract and title creation, Scoping and protocol development, Searching, Quality assurance, Screening, Data extraction, Synthesis and Reporting.

You will learn the terminology behind the technology, find advice about prompt engineering, the art of interacting with AI agents, and a list of the AI tools referenced in this guide. The guide also highlights key ethical concerns about the use of AI tools when reviewing the literature (i.e. lawsuits for copyright infringement).

Although 172 studies are included in a June 2024 search on the use of large language machines (LLMs) in the automation of some stage of the literature review process, only two of these focus on all stages of the process. The current paradigm is that generative AI should be seen as a complement to human researchers but the latter remain responsible for reviewing the literature, providing critical analysis, identifying research gaps, scrutinizing existing theories and extending knowledge.
